Classroom Procedures
Arrival: Every morning when students arrive they meet our classroom instructional assistant Ms. Summer outside on the field. At 8:15am students walk to the classroom quietly, in a straight line, and keeping hands to themselves. Upon reaching the classroom students unpack their book bags. Students take our their cap, water bottle, snack, communications/homework folder, and Chinese folder. Students leave their book bags in their lockers and then enter the classroom where they place each item in it's respective location. Hat, snack, and water bottle go in their individual cubby, homework goes in the homework bin, Chinese folder in Chinese bin, and communications book goes in communications folder bin. Students then proceed to the carpet where they sit criss-cross apple sauce and wait patiently until all their classmates have sat at the carpet.
Morning Routine: Ms. Melissa starts the day by taking attendance and greeting each one of us individually. Then our calendar helper of the week leads us through our calendar routine. We go over what day it is, what day it was yesterday, and what day it will be tomorrow. We then determine the date. We then proceed to reviewing our schedule for the day. Ms. Melissa then reads us a story that we later discuss. We are currently learning about each individual ESLR of our school, these are linked to the story which we later discuss to enhance our understanding of the ESLR's, which are an important part of QISS.
Transitions: When we transition from the carpet to our desk, or to get in line (or vice-versa) we show Ms. Melissa that we are ready but either sitting criss-cross apple sauce or sitting quietly at our desk. Ms. Melissa calls our names one by one and we transition quietly to the next location/activity. When we are working and Ms. Melissa wants our attention she gently calls out "1,2,3 eyes on me" and we in turn reply "1, 2, eyes on you" and we stop what we are doing and give Ms. Melissa our full attention. At this time Ms. Melissa gives us further instructions of what we will do next.
Bathroom: When we need to use the bathroom during the day we make a "W" with our fingers and raise our hand quietly. When Ms. Melissa sees us she will give us a "thumbs up" sign and we then get up quietly and walk to the door where we get a "bathroom pass", and we leave the classroom, go to the bathroom, and then return to the class, return the bathroom pass to it's place, and then join the class again, all without interrupting the class.
Water: Each student is expected to keep a water bottle in the classroom at all times. When a student needs a drink of water they will get up quietly and proceed to have a drink, and then return to their work/activity. If a student needs to re-fill their water bottle they need to raise their hand and ask for permission to leave the classroom. We try to re-fill our bottles on our way back from recess, and lunch.
Line-Up: Each week we have a students who is selected to be the "line leader". We all line up behind our line leader when we are going to a specialist class, or to the cafeteria. In the hallways we walk quietly, with our hands by our sides, and without talking. We make sure to keep enough distance from the person in front of us so that we don't accidentally step on them.
Snack/ Recess: We bring healthy snacks to school (vegetables, fruits, rice, etc). We do not bring candy, and try to keep cookies and chips for special occasions. We do not share our snacks with our classmates, unless it is a special occasion and we have enough for everyone. This way we avoid hurting anyones feelings. We sit at our desks and eat our food. We make sure to clean up when we are finished. We then line up and get ready to go outside for recess.
Cafeteria: When we arrive at the cafeteria we take a seat at our assigned Grade 1 table. We take an empty seat and do not argue about who we want to sit by. We don't play with our food. If we want seconds, or something additional we ask Ms. Summer or Ms. Melissa, and they will give us permission/help us. When we are done eating we take our tray, water cup, and yogurt container to the dirty dishes bin and we empty our left over food in the garbage can. We make sure to leave our place clean. We sit down and wait for everyone else to finish eating. When Ms. Melissa or Ms. Summer instruct us to do so, we line up and walk out together to recess.
Packing-Up: At the end of the day Ms. Melissa goes over our math homework worksheet, and then hands us any papers that need to go home. We put all these in our communications folder. We then bring in our back packs and put away our snack containers, our water bottles, our folder, and our hat. We then line up quietly and wait for everyone to be ready.
